Well, When Your Governor Tells You To Stay At Home, It Is A Really Odd Feeling.
Mar 19, 2020
Well, when your governor tells you to stay at home, it is a really odd feeling. The shock to the system is significant. The uncertainty is what is most overwhelming to feel. But as all of us in California adhere to this "stay at home" mandate, (order) there will be good things to discover.
Being human is never a programized experience. Being human is an adventure. Being human is about resiliency.
What is adventurous to you about all this? Sure, there is fear. Our culture is addicted to shopping and internalizing a certain system of an external sense of identity. You might not be able to present your self in the same way after all this. Every one's finances are going to change because of this Covid19. We have become so dependent on our financial identity that this is frightening. Paying the bills, the mortgage, eating out, buying the new car, getting that new Hummer, going on the next trip.... but we left out some of the most valued experiences of human life.
Being human means sharing and helping one another. Being human means knowing your self, instead of always drugging your mind with noises and stimulating your self with sounds. Every one walks around with their phone in their hands, most people looking down while walking any more. We have people who are killed because people drive while texting. The attachment to technology has gotten so far out of balance that we have forgotten.
Forgotten how to disconnect from the "things", the phones, the earbuds, the Ipads, the computer. Forgotten how to be with oneself. Unfamiliar with what "Quiet" actually sounds like. Unknowing of the gentle vibrations that bring healing to the mind, the body, and the heart.
These days parents are at home with their children. Wow, what a concept, time spent with your own child. Sure, the money pressures are scary. But the these days with your own child have been eye-opening, haven't they? Many parents have shared, "Teachers should get paid a lot more than they do!" Why are parents writing this? Because they are seeing for them selves what it takes to educate a young person these days. But also, they are appreciating what their child is learning. There is value in these days that parents are with their children.
No denying these are difficult frightening days. But don't let the fear prevent you from recognizing any experiences that reveal to you some thing else. Don't let the fear blind you or prevent you from a moment of heartfelt JOY in the midst of the uncertainty. As a human being, you will feel fear and happiness within the span of the same day. As a human you will feel compassion for others. And as a human you will know the depth of feeling that is truly present within you simply because life is now different. Your routine has been changed. You are not in control. And there is uncertainty. All true. But also true is the wonder of YOU. You are a wonder. And so is your partner, and your children, and your friends, and your neighbors, and that small petting person who is hoarding all the toilet paper (sorry if that is you!) is letting fear dictate this time.
Don't let fear dictate who you are during this time. Yes, the fear can be very real. Feel the fear, don't push it away. Feel the fear and the uncertainty, and then take that deep breathe in,,, and let that breathe out slowly. And as you exhale, decide. Decide that you are going to be fully human through this experience. You are going to open your self to the wonder of being a human as you experience each day fully. The fear, the JOY, the uncertainty and the unexpected gifts. You are a human decide to LEARN some thing about your self through this time. And you decide to be caring and compassion toward others. Because each person is in need of a higher compassion, even those who behave badly. It is a time to remember that being human is simply the most amazing experience there is. So make this an adventure. Discover and feel and find out more about your self. And be kind. And if you do all that, I promise you, its going to be okay. Not necessarily easy, but Okay.
